Pointer Sisters

Pointer Sisters

Oakland, California was home for the Pointer Sisters, Anita,
Bonnie, June and Ruth, who would become Grammy Award
winners and one of the top Pop and R&B recording artists of
the 1970’s and early 80’s. Starting out as background singers
and touring with Boz Scaggs, Elvin Bishop and Grace Slick, in
the summer of 1973 the Pointer Sisters created a sensation
at the famed Troubador nightclub in Los Angeles and received
national exposure on the Helen Reddy television show,
launching a very successful recording career.

Landing on the Hit Parade in 1973 with “Yes We Can Can,”
“Fairytale” would follow in 1974 and “How Long (Betcha’
Got A Chick On The Side) in 1975. “Fire,” would be their first
million selling single in 1978. “He’s So Shy,” had similar
success in 1980 with “Slow Hand” also earning them gold
in 1981. Four more million sellers, “Automatic,” “Jump,”
“I’m So Excited” and “Neutron Dance” followed in 1984.

“Fairytale,” a pop and country music hit written by Anita and
Bonnie gave the group an invitation to appear on the Grand Old
Opry in Nashville, where they achieved the rare distinction of
being the first black female singers to perform on that a stage.

In 1994 the Pointer Sisters were honored with a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame and were inducted into the Vocal Group
Hall Of Fame in 2005. June Pointer died on April 11, 2006.
