
Bill Withers
Born and raised in a small coal mining
town in West Virginia,
William Harrison Withers, Jr arrived on July
4, 1938.
At eighteen years of age he enlisted in the United States
navy where he served for eight years. It was during this time
that
began to recognize his talent for
singing and writing songs.
Bill’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” leaped to the top of the
Hit Parade
in
1971 with
“Lean On Me” and “Use Me”
following in 1972.
Again his
“Just the Two Of Us”
topped the
charts in 1981.
Having collected numerous Grammy awards he was also
inducted into
the Song Writers Hall of Fame in 2005.
In 2007 “Lean On Me’ was added
to the Grammy Hall of Fame.
