
Gordon Lightfoot
Gordon Meredith Lightfoot, Jr,, born on November 17, 1938
in Orillia,
Ontario, Canada, who as a youth learned
piano and taught himself
to play drums and percussion. In
high school,
Lightfoot performed
extensively and taught
himself to
play folk guitar and sang
in a church choir as he
began his
climb to fame to be an influential
songwriter and
singer
for many recording stars
in the 1970’s
Lightfoot gained recognition upon signing with Warner
Brothers Records
in 1970 and striking gold with his “If You
Could Ready My Mind.”
“Sundown” topped the charts
in 1974 with “Carefree Highway” earning
him another
gold record
during that year and “The Wreck of the Edmund
Fitzgerald” in 1976.
Gordon Lightfoot was awarded numerous Juno Awards in
Canada and
nominated for five Grammy Awards. In 1980
he was named Canadian male
recording artist of the decade
for his musical contributions in the
1970’s. He also was inducted
into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame
in 1986
and that country’s Walk of
Fame in 1998 as well as the
Canadian
Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
