Martha & the Vandellas

Martha & the Vandellas

Born on July 18, 1941 in Eufaula, Alabama, Martha Reeves
moved with her family to Detroit soon after her birth.

Having spent a few years attempting to break through in
the music business, Martha Reeves took a job as a secretary at the famed
Motown records where she would finally have her dream of stardom
come true when Roselind Ashford and Betty Kelly joined to form Martha
& the Vandellas at Motown subsidiary, Gordy.

From 1963 through 1973 the group landed on the Pop and R&B
Hit Parade more than two dozen times striking gold with “Come
and Get These Memories,” “Heat Wave,” “Quicksand,”
“Dancing in the Street,” “Nowhere to Hide, “
“I’m Ready for Love” and “Jimmy Mack.”

In 1995 Martha and the Vandellas were inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame and in 2003 the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Honored for
her best-selling 1995 autobiography, in 2005 Martha Reeves was elected to
the Detroit City Council where she served until 2009.

Martha Reeves continues to perform with sisters Lois and Delphine Reeves.
